Redstone Content Solutions.

Yes.. I hear you.. Not another one.. But wait let me finish..

Jason Stortz from CoreContentOnly has partnered up with John Klein - This can only be good news..
For those of you know don’t know John Klein - he promotes the Enterprise Content Management industry and serves on the AIIM Midwest Chapter and IOUG Stellent SIG Board of Directors.
You’ve also probably seen him at one of the Oracle User Group events as a speaker discussing challenges clients face via case studies or demonstrating how the ECM bring true ROI (Return On Investment).

As for Jason; well, if you work with the ECM and use Oracle Forums or the yahoo user groups it would be hard to miss him.
I don’t know where he finds the time but if he can help you he will; sometimes, I think he might be better than metalink I always fire him questions.
He will also be one of the first few that I`ll actually let try out the Digaset Desktop GUI for UCM.. And I`m sure I`ll get loads of feedback on how I can improve it more  :)

Also and I`m not 100% on this but I believe Jason will be speaking at OpenWorld 2009. (Im not jealous at all..)

So what makes Redstone stand out from the rest?

For me it is important to know that any consultant team I work with are passionate about the product they support even if there are a few headaches along the way.
And with Oracle there always a few headaches with projects as many of us have come to find out.

I know with Redstone this is true, they are passionate about ECM and have the knowledge and experience to back them up.

Well I guess this isn’t much of a big deal as companies like youTube, Twitter, Facebook & Digg are dropping there support and I believe even Windows has dropped it too (not 100% on this though..).

The question is will some organisations now choose SharePoint over WebCenter, just because of the browser support?
I know of 3 Bluechip organisations who are still on IE6.. .. yes I know IE6!!! WTF? And I`m sure there are a lot more out there..

If Vista had been a success and not a complete flop that forced organisations to have to downgrade back to XP - then I would totally agree there’s no need to support IE6.. But unfortunately this was not the case. Its funny because one of the Oracle presenters of Webcenter had IE6 on their laptop and it wasn’t to show us what would happen if you used IE 6 with WebCenter, he even admitted he liked IE6!! ;) - (yes you know who you are… I guess in his defense he did stick to using the true browse FF)

Oracles view on this; if you are demoing to clients still with IE6 is to tell them to upgrade.. Yup, thats not going to work.
You can`t tell an organisation with thousands of PC users to upgrade their browser if they want to use your product.. CAN YOU?
For me they will just look for an alternative.. And they wont look for an alternative browser like FF that would be too easy and well there isn’t any SSO support with exchange..

So why isn’t there support for IE6.. Well supposedly it is down to the browser technology in IE6 can’t support a lot of the functionality required..
For me thats just a big lie.. C’mon Oracle admit it.. :) - its just that you didn’t want to waste money in investing time to support a browser that will become obsolete by 2010.
BTW - Plug - Digaset Desktop GUI supports IE6 ;)

Now, if any of you have downloaded and installed Windows 7 - can you see the light :)
For me Windows 7 is super fast has an XP virtualised engine that you can integrate into the win7 OS.
This is great news I can now run my XP only software in a complete XP virtualised environment.
Also believe it or not Win7 will also be available for the Netbooks and wont require a beast of a processor or more than 1 GB of ram.. :D
The incentive to move across will be great and then there wont be any need to worry about IE6..

I believe if companies can afford it.. And its not cheap then that’s where they will upgrade..
But this won`t be for another year probably 2 or even 3 - knowing some organisations.
By which time WebCenter will be towering over its competitors and designing is own OS - ‘OOS’.

- BTW the K9 skin that is under development will also not support IE6.. or if I can make it support IE6 I`ll charge $5 but I`m still learning about the whole skinning process - so we`ll see :D

For those of you who do not know what Profiles / Rules do.

  • Profiles: allow you to import rules to customise the available fields and their functionality on some of the UCM pages.
This is based on a chosen meta field value - Generally this is setup on the dDocType - “Document Type” option list.
  • Rules: allow you to create activation conditions, group/order fields, set headlines to grouped fields, hide/exclude displayed meta fields, set default values or derive values to apply/overwrite on the selected meta field, after a user has submitted an update or checked in a new document.

Have a read over at Content Management Simplified on profiles..

I’ve never really seen the need for UCM Profiles, I mean why not just take all your users to a standard checkin page that dynamically update and display required fields? Now wouldn’t that be good idea.. ..
Oracle UCM 11g maybe ;)?

Unfortunately Profiles/Rules are fairly new and were brought into the UCM in version 7, so as you can expect you have to do some things a bit differently..

In the past I have created small components that refresh the page with a bit of javascript and repost any updated form field values from the checkin page. By using global rules and setting an activation condition on the rule. For me this is the correct way to do things;. With profiles you have the restriction of only being able to set the values based on 1 activated condition ie. dDocType. And if you change that value to something else on the checkin page, it does not refresh the fields displayed based on the rules you have set.. (bad… bad… bad…)

Lets quickly talk about settings up Global rules and how I do it. - (Read on..)

Another late post about 3 weeks ago I was away on Holiday in Romania for 10 Days..
I jumped across the border to Bulgaria and went to Sofia and Varna loads of sunshine just what I needed to get rid of my white translucent skin - which I had got locked away in darkness working with Oracle ECM and Digaset components.. Saying that I spent 2 nights on a beach in Romania and fitted in perfectly with my white skin.. Believe it or not there is a beach in Romania dedicated to rockers and goths.. How that works I have no idea but I had a great time.. Just imagine Camden on the beach.. and no it wasnt a hippy beach.. I`ll try and find out the name and let you guys know it has to be on the list of places you visit before you get married or turn 30.. :D

And as always I`m always amazed to see soo many Oracle building in Romania..
But next time I`m going to have to crash one of the buildings and say hi to Flavius Sana see what he`s upto and how the Webcenter world is going.

BTW Flavius was one of the guys who recently trained me up on Webcenter.
He`s a good guy and knows his stuff..

I had a few redhat VMs of webcenter 11g that I had broke some how and he managed to find and clear up the issues in no time..

What else… hmm yes Beer in  Romania is amazingly cheap.. (CHEAPER THAN WATER - I`m not joking..)
I somehow ended up in the student area of Bucharest… lol.. Dont ask how..

But I went to a bar and they had on the menu a “METER OF BEER”!! For £10
Basically if you have ever been to France, Walk About or Revolution you can order a stick of 10 shots or so in Rommania they bring you a tree with 10 holes in it for pint glasses to go into..
I`m sure there were 3 waitress  carrying this tree too me :D..

Thats about it.. Photos to come when I can find the camera ;)
